i come to thee

I recently received this song on a mix CD from a friend in Oregon.  After listening to it several times, I've fallen in love with it.  Perhaps you've heard of it before.  Entitled "Jesus, I Come," I originally thought it was a modern worship song, but after looking up the lyrics, I discovered it was actually written in 1887 by a New England minister.  In 1887.  Written before any of us were born, or even thought of.  Written way before the Modern Age.  Nonetheless, the lyrics still remain true and elegant and rich.  I've posted the song and lyrics below, so take a listen and enjoy.

Out of my bondage, sorrow, and night,
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
Into Thy freedom, gladness, and light,
Jesus, I come to Thee;
Out of my sickness, into Thy health,
Out of my want and into Thy wealth,
Out of my sin and into Thyself,
Jesus, I come to Thee.

Out of my shameful failure and loss,
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
Into the glorious gain of Thy cross,
Jesus, I come to Thee.
Out of earth’s sorrows into Thy balm,
Out of life’s storms and into Thy calm,
Out of distress to jubilant psalm,
Jesus, I come to Thee.

Out of unrest and arrogant pride,
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
Into Thy blessèd will to abide,
Jesus, I come to Thee.
Out of myself to dwell in Thy love,
Out of despair into raptures above,
Upward for aye on wings like a dove,
Jesus, I come to Thee.

Out of the fear and dread of the tomb,
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
Into the joy and light of Thy throne,
Jesus, I come to Thee.
Out of the depths of ruin untold,
Into the peace of Thy sheltering fold,
Ever Thy glorious face to behold,
Jesus, I come to Thee.

  1. Yes, I am familiar with this song but with a slightly different tune. I sang it back in the 70's while singing in the Western PA District Youth Choir. Not quite in the 1800's! It's good to hear the message recycled!

  2. I, too, know this song with a different melody and, yes, it is an old hymn. With either melody, though, the message is still a powerful one. I love you and am so proud of the good work you are doing. I continue to pray for you and the entire crew.

  5. Oh my gosh. Seth you have no idea how crazy this is. Ok, just last Sunday I was home in Lynchburg and got to go to church with Jaime at the church her family goes to. We sang this exact song and I loved it! I asked Jaime what it was called so I could look it up later...and then forgot. And here it is!! Wow, so on the same page.

    Also, I loved your last post. Your pictures were fantastic as always, and I still love hearing about your work in Sierra Leone!!!
